Vermouth....what is it? First of all, it is not the Martini & Rossi that we here in this country have been flooded with for the past few decades. That is not real vermouth. Proper vermouth is a sophisticated wine blended with a bit of fortification spirit and a range of exotic and rich botanicals, including the shrub called wormwood, which has long been known to be an anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety naturopathic ingredient. The word vermouth actually comes from the Germanic word for wormwood, vermut.

Are you a fan of history & nomenclature? Vermouth is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages we know of with evidence of its existence dating back 5+ millennia. From wormwood infused rice liquor in China to Hippocrate Wine in Ancient Greece and then Vinum Absinthium in Ancient Rome, vermouthesque libations have long been used as a cure-all medicinal and one can't help but realize that the added fortification really helped the cause. History shows that life has been hard for a very long time. Vermouth has added a rosy glow.

We are so lucky to have Leith Shenstone with us for this event. Leith represents the very best aromatized wines (i.e. vermouth) on the planet. Together with the help of his very good friend Giancarlo Mancino, renowned aperitivo producer and Italian barman, they will pick apart the "grand-cru" vermouth line of Piemonte (North Italy): Mancino Vermouth. These are absolutely fascinating delights full of nuance and surprises. Any hipster bartender will lick their chops with this stuff but it doesn't have to be used in a cocktail. Sip it like a wine! As an added bonus, as long as you are judicious with keeping it capped and refrigerated, it will last a few months.

Forget what you think you know about vermouth my dear buddies; this is the real stuff. Join us to learn about this category and delightful ways to enjoy it at home.
