Our next sustenance suggestion transports you clear around the globe (no prescreening or passport required) to the Sichuan Provence of China. This far-off destination is the source of Sichuan pepper – a unique spice closely related to citrus fruit. Not only is it a widely used East Asian culinary ingredient, as a bonus, Sichuan pepper has traditional Chinese medicine applications as well. It is reputed to have analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. Plus, eating spicy food releases endorphins. (We could all use a few more endorphins these days!)

At bayleaf, we have been loving the crunchy, savory, tongue tingling treat Fly by Jing Sichuan Chili Crisp (a key ingredient in Mapo Tofu and Chinese hot pot but equally delicious on stir-fry, eggs, and our favorite – ramen!) so much that we had to add Fly by Jing Zhong Dumpling Sauce and Mala Spice Mix to our repertoire. Zhong Sauce is a sweet, spicy, umami rich, and exceptionally versatile dipping sauce, finishing sauce, or marinade mixer made with soy sauce, brown sugar, mushrooms, and some spicy spices. Mala Spice Mix is an intoxicating blend of eleven herbs and spices that goes above and beyond to add frisson to french fries, pizzaz to pizza, or a slammin sizzle to steak.

Take your taste buds on an Asian adventure with the Fly by Jing set, packed and ready for travel in a reusable bayleaf wine bag. Be sure to send a postcard and tell us all about your tasty trip!
